"I support immediate recognition of the State of Palestine and used my only Prime Ministers Question given to me this year to ask for this.
The ongoing crisis in Gaza is horrific, with the latest attack on Rafah killing and wounding more people and moving a million people.
I continue to call for a ceasefire. I am now a candidate in the election and my last act as your MP was to write to the Prime Minster - you can read this letter here.
As your MP, I visited Palestine and Israel in September 2023 a week before the attacks and returned in February 2024. I have spoken many times in Parliament to demand more action to end the conflict and build long-lasting peace. In Prime Minister's Questions I called for the recognition of a Palestinian state, and in Parliament I have called for a surge in aid, and a Palestinian Family Visa Scheme.
Before the snap election was called, I was due to give a speech in Parliament calling for the UK to stop selling arms to Israel. I have voted for a ceasefire. Additionally, I have been frequently meeting aid agencies such as Medical Aid for Palestine, Save the Children and CAFOD to hear what the situation is on the ground and to take up their calls for action as well as regular meetings with Palestine’s Ambassador to the UK.
For many years, pre-dating my time as an MP, I have been part of Labour Friends of Palestine and the Middle East. You will find me on their list of Parliamentary supporters. I am also part of Labour Friends of Israel. This is in order to support left-wing voices for peace and support the calls for a two-state solution that is fair for all, and oppose the right-wing policies that have led to the current disaster.
If Labour form a government after the upcoming General Election on July 4, long-term peace and security in the Middle East will be an immediate focus. Labour will continue to push for an immediate ceasefire, the release of all hostages, the upholding of international law, and a rapid increase of aid into Gaza.
Palestinian statehood is the inalienable right of the Palestinian people. It is not in the gift of any neighbour and is also essential to the long-term security of Israel. We are committed to recognising a Palestinian state as a contribution to a renewed peace process which results in a two-state solution with a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state.
Now that a general election has been called, Parliament is dissolved. This means that every seat in the House of Commons becomes vacant and there are no MPs until after the general election. I am running for re-election as the Labour candidate for Putney, Roehampton, Southfields, and Wandsworth Town. If I am re-elected, I will continue to raise concerns about the atrocities in Palestine, call for safety for Palestinians and the future of Palestine and lobby for Israel to be held accountable on the global stage. I will also keep on listening to aid workers on the grounds and local residents, to raise their concerns."
