UK Parliamentarians demand release of Palestinian human rights defender Issa Amro, arrested by the Palestinian Authority

Caabu is alarmed and appalled by the arrest of human rights defender lssa Amro by the Palestinian Authority for a Facebook post criticising the arrest of a radio journalist on 4 September 2017. Caabu has written to UK ministers about Issa Amro's arrest and has written to the Palestinian Authority demanding his immediate release. 

A cross-party group of British politicians wrote to the UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson on occupied East Jerusalem on 1 August 2017 following on from increased tensions and clashes there.

Iraqis from all communities have suffered over the last 15 years of conflict. The spillover from the Syrian civil war worsened an already violent and volatile situation in the country. With large battles having been fought in and around Mosul recently, the need for humanitarian assistance to people who have been forced to flee their homes has increased. Syrians have also fled to Iraq, contributing to the refugee emergency. In Iraq today there are;

Syria is the site of one of the worst refugee crises in history. For over 6 years, people have been fleeing the consequences of the ruinous civil war. All international responses to the crisis are in dire need of economic support to sustain themselves. These are some of the organisations that work to provide basic services and shelter under incredibly difficult circumstances in Syria and the neighbouring countries.  

The BBC has ammended an article, "Jerusalem holy site measures fail to halt crisis" (28.7.2017) about the crisis that errupted in Jerusalem in July in response to a complaint from Caabu director, Chris Doyle. In their coverage of the clashes, the BBC originally published an article that we cosidered to be misleading. The article in question started off "Israeli forces and Palestinians have clashed in East Jerusalem, the Occupied Territories and Gaza".

Since 2015, the conflict between the Saudi-led coalition and Houthi rebels in Yemen has plunged the country into a dire humanitarian situation. Airstrikes and fighting are making the country unsafe and a blockade on a country which is 80-90% dependent on imports of food, medicine and fuel is crippling the economy and starving its population.

Former Australian ambassador to Syria and author of "Aleppo: A History" and "Monuments of Syria" lectured on the cultural legacy of Syria in the context of the ongoing civil war. The talk was arranged in cooperation by Caabu and the Mosaic rooms. 

Since 14 July, the tensions in Jerusalem have been at breaking point. Israeli police and military have interrupted public prayers with tear gas and rubber bullets. Demonstrators have clashed with the police and several young Palestinians have been killed in the clashes. In the West Bank, three Israeli settlers were killed by a Palestinian militant. A surge in violence in Palestine/Israel tends to focus more media attention on a conflict that often goes ignored and unexamined when the violence and abuses are kept at a low hum, rather than a roar.
