On 13 June 2022, Caabu hosted an online discussion on the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh, the Al Jazeera Arabic journalist killed on 11 May 2022 whilst covering an Israeli raid on the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank. At the meeting, we heard from a work colleague of 17 years Wessam Hammad as to what she was like, what she represented to the Palestinian people.

MPs and Lords write to Foreign Secretary to try secure the release of Ala'a Abd el Fattah in Egypt

A group of 10 MPs and 17 Peers including Caabu Chair, the Rt Hon David Jones MP, have written to the Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss to urge her to use "all possible means" to secure the release of Ala'a Abd el-Fattah, a British-Egyptian national held in jail in Egypt.

British MPs outraged over the killing of and desecration of Palestinian journalist, Shireen Abu Akleh's funeral

On 16 May 2022, an Urgent Question was secured on the killing of Shireen Abu Akleh which happened on 11 May 2022 and the subsequent desecration and attacks on her funeral held on 13 May 2022. Many British Parliamentarians from all major UK political parties spoke of their outrage and distress, and were appalled by not only Shireen's killing in Jenin, but also the Israeli police violence at her funeral, and the raids and confiscation of Palestinian flags at her home.

Derby High School Workshop on Refugees

On 20 April Caabu hosted an all-day workshop on refugees with students from Derby High School. The workshop kicked off by CAABU director, Chris Doyle welcoming a group of 14 students from the school and introducing the topic of Refugees from MENA on multiple matters including “Internally Displaced Person”, “broad refugees” and why this topic is particularly important and relevant in today’s context.
