Sanctions on Israeli Settlers and Israeli Settler Groups

UPDATE: 21 January 2025:

Since the inauguration of Donald Trump to the US presidency, all settler sanctions imposed by Biden have been rescinded. It is therefore more important than ever that the UK and EU continue to take action on the matter of settler violence in the occupied West Bank.

The UK needs to do much more in terms of sanctioning illegal Israeli settlers and settler groups.

Initially, the UK was behind the US and the EU on individuals and organisations responsible for violent attacks on Palestinians, theft of Palestinian land and settlement expansion.

However, the UK continues to sanction violent Israeli individual settlers, violent settler groups and illegal outposts. Illegal outposts are only different to illegal settlements in that outposts lack Israeli planning approval, but both are violations of international law. The details can be found in the chart shown.

Settlements are illegal under international law, this includes building and residing in settlements.

It is welcome that the UK has taken the steps to place sanctions on individuals and organisations responsible for violent attacks on Palestinians, theft of Palestinian land, and settlement expansion. But, there is much more that can be done.

As seen in the chart, the US, the EU, and the UK, despite being close allies, are not completely aligned on who and how many they have placed sanctions on.

We urge that the UK follows suit and joins our partners in placing sanctions on those that the US and EU have already deemed to be in breach of international law.
