About the Speaker:

Hayder al-Khoei is an associate fellow in the Middle East and North Africa Programme at Chatham House and a fellow at Forward Thinking. His research interests include Middle Eastern history, politics and Islamic studies, with his areas of expertise being Iraq, Iran and clerical authority in Shi'a Islam. He holds a Master's degree in International Studies and Diplomacy from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He also recently gained a degree in Islamic Studies from The Islamic College, London.

About the Chair:

John Nicolson was elected as the SNP MP for East Dunbartonshire in May 2015. He is the SNP spokesperson on Culture, Media and Sport in the House of Commons and a member of the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee. Before becoming an MP, John worked as a journalist, and joined the BBC in 1987. He reported for a variety of BBC programmes including On the Record, Panorama, Assignment, The Late Show, and numerous live general election, European election, and budget programmes. He was a presenter on Newsnight for three years, and also anchored the BBC's Breakfast news. In the run up to the first Gulf War, John reported from Iraq (and from Palestine during it). He travelled back from Baghdad with Edward Heath and the 'human shield' hostages who had just been released.

John recently traveled to Palestine with Caabu and Medical Aid for Palestinians.
